We are seeking expressions of interest from Kaurna artists to collaborate on a significant affordable housing apartments project on Kaurna Yerta (Adelaide Plains). This initiative celebrates Kaurna culture and heritage by integrating meaningful First Nations art into the built environment, fostering connection and identity for residents and the wider community.
Background
Affordable housing projects and community housing providers play a vital role in addressing the need for additional affordable homes that are safe and culturally inclusive for residents. The South Australian Government is funding a pipeline of affordable housing projects in response to rising pressure in the housing market. Among the first projects in this initiative are the Affordable Apartments Projects in Prospect, which form the basis of this Expression of Interest (EOI). Renewal SA will deliver 100 affordable rental apartments across two apartment buildings, to be managed by a Community Housing Provider upon completion.
These projects will provide additional homes with opportunities to embed meaningful connections to culture and heritage within the built environment. By incorporating Kaurna art and design elements, the complexes will foster a sense of belonging, celebrate the unique stories of Kaurna Yerta, and promote a deeper understanding and respect for the traditional custodians of the land.
About the Project
This housing development includes two residential apartment buildings on Lot 18 and Lot 59, each with its own artistic theme:
Lot 18 Apartment Building Contemporary First Nations Art: A celebration of modern Kaurna culture, featuring bold, innovative designs that inspire and connect, relevant to its position at the precinct entrance
Lot 59 Apartment Building Earthy and Organic Artwork Styles: A tribute to traditional Kaurna heritage, showcasing natural and grounded elements reflecting the connection to Country, and the unique context of the building amongst trees, reserves, and urban amenities.
We are commissioning two final pieces of artwork from two different artists (one artwork per artist). These artworks will be adapted for use within each apartment building, and introduced across signage in interior elements, and on external finishing elements. The original artworks will be featured in the entrance foyer of each apartment building.
Artwork Types and Media
We encourage applications from artists of all backgrounds, including emerging, mid-career, and established artists, working in a variety of mediums. The final artwork must be digital; however, Ochre Dawn’s First Nations graphic design team can assist with converting physical artworks (e.g. paintings, carvings, or other 2D and 3D forms) into digital formats. This ensures accessibility for artists working in any medium.
Please note that the license for the artwork will apply only to these buildings at this time. Future use of the artwork, if any, will be negotiated separately with the successful artists.
Artist Payments
• Shortlisted Artists: Up to four shortlisted artists will be paid $1,000 each to develop draft concepts and narratives based on the project brief.
• Final Artwork Fee: The final fee for each artwork will be negotiated with the selected artists, ensuring fair and equitable compensation.
